The South African Students Congress (SASCO) endorses and supports the 14th annual international Israeli Apartheid Week under the theme of Afro-Palestinian Solidarity. SASCO also takes this opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions Campaign against the Apartheid Israeli Regime.
SASCO honours and salutes the fact that South African university campuses have long been the foreground of major political activism and struggle by calling on all its structures to support the 14th Israeli Apartheid Week and to get involved in the broader boycott, divestment, and sanctions campaign. We declare again that all SA campuses must be Apartheid-Israel free zones, and remain committed to intensifying the ongoing academic and cultural boycotts of the regime.
SASCO recognizes that Israeli academic institutions form the ideological backbone of the Israeli regime of settler colonialism, apartheid, and occupation. Similarly, SASCO affirms that the regime’s cultural production functions as a similarly dangerous tool of propaganda and that engaging with it serves to do nothing more than normalize occupation and violations of Palestinian human rights.
SASCO will continue to struggle for the liberation of the people of Palestine against Apartheid Israel through this campaign and beyond.
Our structures are called upon, in line with their commitment of undertaking international solidarity work; to organize events and programs which will heighten awareness about the apartheid Israeli regime and the countless human right violations and self-determination violations against the people of Palestine.
In Nelson Mandela’s words: ‘It behoves all South Africans, erstwhile beneficiaries of generous international support, to stand up and be counted among those contributing actively to the cause of freedom and justice….we know too well that our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians.’
