SASCO Gauteng statement of the Gazette of the MEDUNSA de-merger

2 June 2013

Revolutionary greetings

The South African Students Congress (SASCO) in the Gauteng province welcomes the decision by the Ministry of Higher Education and Training to finally gazette its intention to start a process which will lead to the de-merger of MEDUNSA campus from the University of Limpopo.

SASCO has in the past two years been in the forefront of the struggles faced by MEDUNSA students in making sure that the campus is ultimately the de-merged.

We see the need to de-merge as an urgent matter for the students of MEDUNSA and the country at large.

We hope the de-merger process will ultimate establish a new stand-alone health sciences institution, that will go a long way in closing the skills gap we have in health discipline. This will also enhance Minister Aaron Motswaledi’s noble plan of having a fully fledged NHI as soon as it practically possible.

SASCO salutes the students of MEDUNSA and branches of SASCO in Gauteng who embarked on a massive mass action the 18th March 2011 to 123 Schoeman to demand this de-merger. We believe that Dr Bonginkosi Emmanuel Ndzimande will treat this matter with the urgency it deserves.
