SASCO's Tribute to a Revolutionary Leader, Comrade Hugo Chavez

06 March 2013

As the South African Students' Congress (SASCO) we are deeply saddened by the passing of the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, comrade Hugo Chavez. This loss hits hard on the international struggle against imperialism. We wish to extend our condolences to his family, the government and the people of Venezuela.

Comrade Chavez's life long struggle will not go in vein; we are confident that the people of Venezuela will ensure that they pick up the spear and continue the struggle. The progressive forces of the world have lost a committed revolutionary fighter, who even when faced by death never retreated nor compromised the struggle for a socialist world. Comrade Hugo understood that the struggle should not only be waged in Venezuela or Latin America but across the borders of South America and the world over. His commitment to the world struggling masses certainly made him an icon for all peace loving people of the world.

Comrade Chavez worked tirelessly to improve the lives of the people of Venezuela. This is evident by the provision of Free Quality Education and Healthcare, the reduction of unemployment and many such interventions that assured a better future for Venezuelans. He ensured that the people of Venezuela benefit from their mineral resources, by ensuring that the country's oil wealth was used to better the lives of the people.

We wish to reiterate our commitment to the struggle for a better world, where there is no exploitation of man by man. A world that comrade Chavez dedicated his life to, a world he struggled for until his last breath. Comrade Hugo Chavez to us represented the aspirations of the working class and poor people of Latin America and the world-over. Indeed the world lost a fearless fighter in their struggle against Western imperialism.

We salute comrade Hugo Chavez; we lower our flags in respect for his life-long struggle for a better world.
