The South African Students Congress (SASCO) has learnt with deep sadness and a deep sense of loss about the untimely death, in the early hours of this morning of comrade Mike Mokhutshane, the Deputy National Secretary of the Youth Communist League of South Africa (YCLSA).
We would like to take this opportunity to send our deep and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and comrades who have woken up today to learn of a loss of this working class fighter and fierce opponent of oppression.
As we mourn the death of this gallant fighter we should take some consolation in celebrating a short-life well-lived. Comrade Mike departs early but having left a significant mark in the struggle against super-exploitation of the working class, national oppression and gender subjugation.
As a Communist, comrade Mike knew the importance and durability of the Progressive Youth Alliance (PYA) and always worked to ensure that the PYA components are organizationally strong to wage the revolution but beyond all there is revolutionary unity and some form of interdependence amongst them as this is important for the unity of the entire Revolutionary Alliance.
This he did not do because he just believed it was fashionable to do so. He remains a true embodiment of the PYA, having started serving in the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) and then serving in SASCO up until he was the Provincial Chairperson of SASCO in the North West Province. He was also a member of the ANC Youth League.
He served the Communist Movement with distinction, having served as the YCL Provincial Secretary and a PWC member of the South Africa Communist Party in the North West province. It is because of this strong sense of commitment to the struggle for socialism that the entire membership of the Youth Communist League elected him as the Deputy National Secretary at the Mafikeng Congress.
An immeasurable loss has been sustained by the South African working class. he gap left by the departure of this giant will soon enough make itself felt. The entire student community has also lost one of its own; it has lost one of its most trusted convocants.
We again want to pass our heartfelt condolences to his family, the Young Communist League and all who are bereaved by the sudden departure of this great revolutionary.
On this day, comrade Mike is in the company of revolutionaries such as Ruth First, Moses Kotane, Harry Gwala, Claude Qavane, Wanga Sigila, Siphiwe Zuma and many other communist and students leaders. Guided by the spirit of these revolutionaries we can never be defeated; we will for sure emerge victorious in the struggle for Free Education and Socialism Now.
