Statement on the passing away of Comrade Manto Tshabalala-Msimang

17 December 2009

We are deeply saddened by the abrupt passing away of former student leader and ANC struggle veteran comrade Manto Tshabalala-Msimang. The loss of this veteran happened too soon, before generations of student leaders had learned enough from her immense and probing intellect.

As a student movement, we always enjoyed but not always agreed with her ferocious intellect and particularly her refusal to kowtow to dogma. Her major strength was that of a revolutionary who kept to her views even though some of them were unpopular. Certainly, she was not a populist. This is one aspect as an organization we have benefited immensely from.

To us, as an organization, comrade Manto Tshabalala-Msimang remained a liberation hero till the end. Only those who suffer from selective amnesia would want to lift the latter part of her life where she was a minister and write her life on that basis. Comrade Tshabalala-Msimang's life spanned decades and not only one, on which she was a minister.
