The South African Students Congress (SASCO) to host its National General Council in Kwa Zulu Natal from the 26th June to 01 July 2018. The primary task of the NGC is to evaluate the work of the NEC since its election in December 2017 and give a mandate to the 20th NEC, The NGC will also be charged with a responsibility to review policies of the organization.
Members of SASCO have for some time been denied an opportunity to discuss and share their views about the life of the organization and the total transformation of the higher education sector. Leadership race has for the past 6 years surpassed and relegated policy discussion, leading to an unprecedented violent behaviour during our congresses.
This NGC will, therefore, serve as the platform to allow all members of the organization to participate in drafting a program of action that will bring unity in the organization as we move towards renewal, modernizing and repositioning of SASCO.
On Provincial Congresses
We wish to congratulate all elected PECs. The NEC has noted with gratification that almost all congresses were characterized by unity of purpose and no reports of violence; this is work in progress. The NEC remains committed to working towards the unity of the organization at all levels.
We wish to remind all elected leaders that their election must be in the best interest of the organisation and that they must at all material times prioritize the student movement and its constituency. The NEC will be monitoring the PECs in office to ensure that they intensify political education and implement student-centered program and campaigns.
Provincial Induction Workshop
The NEC has issued an instruction to all PECs to convene their induction workshops on/before the 15 June 2018. The induction workshops are compulsory to all PECs and RECs, the primary objective of these workshops is to unwind the human resource within our structures in order to effectively rollout our POA and reach out to all branches. NEC members will also be deployed to form part of the workshop. We wish to encourage provinces to make use of SASCO convocation and other leaders from the mass democratic movement.
The NEC has also issued an instruction to provinces to meet SRC Presidents and Secretaries of both TVET colleges and Universities as means of getting the state of institutions. This exercise will aid the NEC to develop a clear program of action towards SRC elections and second-semester RTLC.
On the court proceedings
The organization as a legal persona with legal standing has been taken to court by its former Secretary General and Deputy Secretary General. The organization, SASCO, National Disciplinary Committee and NEC Members were all cited as respondents to the case. As law-abiding citizens, we have been participating fully in the court process and cooperating with the law enforcement agency. We have been advised that judgment will be delivered on Tuesday, the 12th day of June 2018. We encourage our members to remain focused and continue with the work of the organization.
In light of the TVET and UNISA registration for the second semester, all members and activists to continue with the RTLC work and make use of the available guidelines.
